Give a Practical Gift That Seniors Will Use and Appreciate

When buying a gift for someone, the goal is to find something they’ll use and enjoy.

To help you find a fantastic gift that an older adult will find helpful, we rounded up 15 of the best practical gifts for seniors.

The 15 Most Practical Gifts for Seniors

1) Big button simplified TV remote control

products that make life easier for seniors

Today’s TV remote controls have far too many tiny buttons.

Gifting them with a simplified TV remote means your older adult won’t have trouble watching their favorite shows.

We found two great options:

2) $24 (deal price) Hamilton Beach Electric Tea Kettle, Water Boiler & Heater, 1.7 L

An electric water heater is safer for seniors in the kitchen than boiling water on the stove. It shuts off automatically when it’s ready.

Give the gift of delicious hot beverages with an electric water kettle.

Your older adult will be able to heat water quickly, and the auto-shutoff and boil-dry protection make it safer than stovetop boiling.

3) $30 YnM Weighted Blanket – 15 pounds

stress relief products

This is as close as you can get to gifting someone a good night’s sleep.

Weighted blankets are a simple, non-drug option scientifically proven to reduce anxiety, calm nerves, provide comfort, and promote deep sleep.

They’re generally quite pricey, but this is the least expensive one of its size that we’ve found.

The heavy weight of the blanket performs deep pressure therapy. When the body feels the gentle pressure, it produces serotonin, a neurotransmitter that improves mood and promotes calm.

4) $13 Bed Buddy Aromatherapy Pad for Neck & Shoulders – Microwave or Freeze, Lavender & Mint Scent

This aromatherapy pad relaxes through heating or chilling

Soothe aching joints and muscles anytime with the convenience of this aromatherapy pad.

Warm it in the microwave or chill it in the freezer, then wrap it around the neck, shoulders, or body to reduce pain, tension, and stiffness.

5) $23 ASAKUKI 300ML Essential Oil Diffuser

An aromatherapy diffuser gently scents the air to promote calm and relaxation

Aromatherapy is a simple way to create a calm and relaxing environment. Smells can also powerfully affect the body’s nervous system.

A research study even showed that lavender essential oil can have a calming effect similar to anti-anxiety medications.

Take your gift to the next level by pairing this beautiful diffuser with some of an older adult’s favorite scented essential oils so they can enjoy it right away.

6) $23 Electric Jar Opener

Many jar lids are tough for seniors to open. This helpful kitchen aid opens any jar with ease.

Jars are tough to open, especially for someone with arthritis or other health conditions that affect grip strength.

An automatic jar opener is a thoughtful gift that makes opening jars easy and gives your older adult greater independence.

Plus, since this opener sits on top, there’s no limit to the jar height.

7) $29 Secura Automatic Soap Dispenser, Touchless

bathroom aids for seniors

To make hygiene easier, an automatic soap dispenser makes an excellent gift.

They’re invaluable for people with health conditions like arthritis or limited mobility because they reduce the amount of movement needed to clean hands.

These dispensers also encourage cleanliness by dispensing the right amount of soap onto the hands.

And for those who prefer foam soap, we also like this foaming automatic soap dispenser.

8) $7 Faucet Extender

Faucet extenders make it easier for seniors to wash hands

An excellent add-on for the automatic soap dispenser is this faucet extender, which makes hand washing more comfortable.

This simple attachment slips onto most faucets and extends the water stream as it comes out. Thus, there’s no need to bend or reach forward while washing hands.

9) $36 MoCuishle Shiatsu Neck Back Massager Pillow with Heat

stress relief products

Wouldn’t an older adult love a daily heated back or neck massage? This lovely gift makes that wish a reality.

Plus, this massager is cordless, so they can easily use it anywhere: back, legs, or wherever there’s muscle pain or tension.

10) $28 Luxe Bidet Neo 110 Non-Electric Bidet Toilet Attachment

A bidet is a more comfortable and luxurious way to clean up after using the toilet.

It can help seniors be more independent in the bathroom and improve personal hygiene by making cleaning easier, especially for those with conditions such as dementia, arthritis, or stroke.

This one has good customer reviews and easily attaches to a standard toilet without electricity.

11) $30 Vive Extra Long Handled Shoe Horn (31.5 Inches)

An extra long shoehorn means no more bending over to put on shoes

You might think all shoe horns are created equal, but this one is a cut above the rest.

The extra length means no bending over, and the strong metal makes it extra durable. Many reviewers loved this well-designed shoehorn.

12) $20 eufy by Anker, Stick-On Night Light, Warm White LED, Motion Sensor, 3-Pack

Stick on motion activated LED lights improve nighttime safety

Automatic night lights help seniors see their path and reduce fall risk when going to the bathroom at night.

These are especially helpful because they’re battery-powered LEDs so that you can stick them anywhere.

13) $40 Shape28 Floor Mat Ultra-Thin Kitchen Rug with Non Slip Rubber Backing 35 x 23 inches

A non-slip, ultra thin mat keeps seniors safer in the bathroom

This gift upgrades your older adult’s bathroom decor while also increasing safety.

Traditional bath mats increase fall risk because they're bulky and are likely to slide or flip up.

A better solution is a low-profile, non-skid mat like this one. Although it is officially called a kitchen mat, it works equally well in the bathroom.

It’s an ultra-thin mat with a fully rubberized backing that will stick securely to the floor.

And because this mat is so thin, it’s less likely to flip up at the edges and cause tripping. It’s also easier to glide over with a walker.

14) $25 Sofa Shield Original Reversible Chair Protector

Waterproof chair recliner slipcovers look great and protect furniture

Another wonderful gift is to update their favorite chair with a removable, reversible, washable chair cover. These come in a variety of lovely colors and patterns.

15) Clip-on reading light

products that make life easier for seniors

Older eyes need more light to see. Small clip-on lights put extra lighting exactly where it’s needed.

 Final Thoughts

The most cherished gifts for seniors are those that demonstrate genuine thoughtfulness and understanding of their daily life. By choosing a present that offers comfort, promotes safety, or solves a common frustration, you're giving more than just an object; you're giving the gift of ease, independence, and peace of mind.

Great ideas! My mother loved that I bought her specific greeting cards for family members birthdays and anniversary’s and organized them in order in a small binder. I am doing it again this year. I also did a Shutterfly calendar to go along with it.

Some of these 15 gifts for seniors, are just great for any age. However,

you don’t add where any can be purchased. This is very important for seniors,

as many have issues with mobility and can’t move from store to store to store

for their purchases.
