Bay Area In-Home Care from Home Instead

In-home care

Finding in-home care for older adults

One of the biggest caregiving challenges is finding qualified in-home care for your older adult. In-home care is a good option when your older adult is able to remain at home, but needs help with activities of daily living (ADLs).

Hiring an independent caregiver takes work – placing ads, conducting background checks, and figuring out a backup plan if they can’t work. A traditional agency eliminates some of these tasks and may be the right choice for your situation.

Local Bay Area in-home care

A local Bay Area service called Home Instead connects you to verified in-home care workers. Home Instead offers services from companionship and housekeeping to dementia care and skilled nursing. We like that Home Instead conducts background and reference checks on all their in-home care workers.

Traditional agency pricing

Home Instead quoted us a general rate of $26-28/hour with a weekly minimum of 20 hours/week. That works out to about $2,100 for the month. Unfortunately, Medicare doesn’t cover non-medical in-home services. Also, Medi-Cal doesn’t cover in-home care for California.

Home Instead has backup care

From the start, Home Instead assigns one main caregiver and a backup person. The secondary caregiver steps in if your primary caregiver has an emergency so you’re never left scrambling to find help. For those who don’t have flexible jobs or don’t have family available to help at the last minute, it’s a relief to always have backup care.

In-person customer support

If you like knowing you can talk to someone if there’s a problem, consider traditional agencies like Home Instead. They provide customer support 24 hours/day and 7 days/week. When we called, we reached a live person within seconds. Home Instead also has office locations where you can meet them in person.

Bottom line

Home Instead is a great in-home care option when you need qualified caregivers, customer support, and guaranteed backup care. But the hourly rates and weekly minimums are expensive and might not be the best fit for every situation.
