Caregivers still need regular doctor checkups
When you’re wrapped up in taking care of everything your older adult needs, it’s tough to find time to care for yourself too.
But getting regular doctor check-ups is a very important part of making sure you stay healthy and can continue caring for your senior. To make it easier for you to care for yourself, we found an easy way to book convenient house call doctors through a new service called Heal.
Heal provides affordable, on-demand house call visits from high-quality, licensed primary care physicians. That makes it easy for you to see a doctor whenever it suits YOUR schedule.
4 ways Heal keeps caregivers healthy and makes life easier
1. Improve health
Studies show that 11% of caregivers say that caregiving has caused their physical health to get worse. 72% said that they don’t go to the doctor as often as they should and 55% reported missing doctor’s appointments.
It might not seem like a big deal to miss a few doctor’s appointments, but regular exams and preventive care services are essential for preventing disease and catching medical conditions early.
It’s not selfish to look after your own health. Think of it this way – if you get seriously ill, who will care for your senior? With stakes that high, it’s better not leave your own health to chance.
2. Save time
Caregivers typically don’t have time to call for an appointment during business hours, drive to a doctor’s office, and wait for an unknown amount of time for the appointment to start.
With Heal’s service, just use the app to book your appointment – it’s quick and easy to use. The doctor will show up at your house within the two-hour window you chose.
3. Save money
Without insurance, a home visit from a Heal doctor will cost a $99 flat fee. That’s less than what most doctors charge for an office visit. Lab tests or additional services will cost extra, just like they would at any doctor’s office.
If you have one of the insurance plans accepted by Heal, using their doctors will cost the same as going to any other doctor.
Bonus discount! We reached out to Heal and they were kind enough to offer DailyCaring readers $20 off your first cash pay visit (discounts aren’t available for those using insurance). Use the promo code SF20 when you book your appointment.
4. Simplify scheduling
Leaving the house to go to the doctor might require you to find someone else to care for your senior while you’re out — that’s no easy task. Having a doctor come to your house eliminates that problem.
Most caregivers also can’t afford to take time off from work – you’re probably saving your sick days for your senior’s many appointments. Heal doctors are available from 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week, so you can get an appointment after work or on weekends.
Heal’s house call doctors are great for seniors too
Heal is also a helpful service for older adults. Anyone who has difficulty getting to a doctor’s office would benefit from home doctor visits. Plus, the Heal doctors take their time and won’t rush your senior through the appointment.
For now, the visit would cost the $99 flat fee because Medicare isn’t accepted yet, but the company expects that it will be accepted at the end of 2016.
For seniors without access to reliable transportation or who have lowered immune systems, Alzheimer’s, dementia, or limited mobility, $99 might be well worth it. Getting home doctor visits means they can avoid exhausting, germy, and disorienting experiences.
How does Heal work?
To get started with Heal, download the Heal app for your iPhone or Android mobile phone – get them here.
In the Heal app, create a free account. Before you go through the process, it will first check if the service is available in your area. Heal doctors are currently available in major West Coast cities, but you can sign up to be notified when their service is available in your area.
The app makes it easy to enter necessary personal information, add your older adult or other family members who also want to use Heal doctors, book home doctor visits, and enter payment or insurance information.
When you book an appointment, you’ll get a confirmation email with details about what to expect from the visit, the Heal phone number in case you need anything, and more information about using health insurance.
